LCD CreditCard to Get Built-In Display and Keypad

VISA recently showcased a new generation of credit cards that come with built-in LCD displays and keypads. These new types of credit cards were conceptualized in an effort to lessen instances of online shopping fraud which has become common these days. The new cards aren’t any different in form from current ones sans the display and the 12-button keypad.

Every time you want to buy online, you would be required to input a pin number directly onto the credit card which then displays a security code on the LCD screen.  Upon implementation of these new cards, online stores will start requiring input of the security codes they generate. “We saw a big rise in online shopping, but consumers were still worried about fraud,” said Sandra Alzetta of Visa.

Visa card with LCD screen and keypad

In a bid to improve credit card and banking security, Visa is trialling a new credit card that incorporates a keypad and LCD screen. The owner enters their PIN number and the card generates a one-time code that can be used to verify online purchases and access to online banking facilities.

The card also has a second purpose because the one-time code could also be used to control remote access to company computer networks, providing companies with a corporate card and security device, all rolled into one.

Will it catch on? I’m not so sure we need a wallet-full of credit cards each with their own battery-powered calculator – “Help! My credit card battery has gone flat.”
